To counter trade related transactions of sale under which a single document, signed by the parties, provides for the mutual obligations of the parties or a cashless exchange of goods of equal value or accept payment for the delivered goods of one party partly cash and partly goods. The second option describes the most common symptom of counter-trade, the first - its special case, known as barter.

Countertrade is an ancient kind of national and international trade, which flourished until the money became the universal equivalent exchange. Therefore, the development of monetary counter trade is largely meaningless, but in the second half of XX century. its use has expanded again the following main reasons:

• uneven economic development of countries and entire economic regions do not allow developing countries to have sufficient foreign exchange funds for settlements;

• the increasing problem of sale of goods is forcing retailers to increase the competitiveness of their products and increase sales, offer them with full or partial payment buyer counter delivery of goods;

• the failure of economic reforms, such as in Russia, causing an economic crisis, accompanied by non-payments crisis, forcing employers to return to the counter exchange of goods and limit payments in cash.
